Every parent wants the best for their children and to protect them from harm. With the internet in full force and news about sexual abuse out there it is important to educate your children on how to be safe and have boundaries. Sexual abuse, rape, and sexual exploitation lawyer and advocate Jeff Herman knows all too well about cases where a person or child was harmed and wants parent so help their children be as safe as possible in a ever-changing world. When you talk to your children honestly and openly you can be more involved in their lives and know what’s going on.

The first thing to do is be aware of the signs of sexual abuse. Because children are new to the world, they depend on their parents for everything. That is why you as a parent have to be aware of these signs. Some of them include drastic behaviors like hurting themselves. They may also regress into outgrown behaviors. These include sucking their thumb or bed-wetting. Another clue may be that they change their behavior, acting out in sexual ways, acting out in anger, get depressed, have nightmares, etc.

What you talk to your children about this very heavy matter use age appropriate language so they understand. Carefully choosing the right terminology and vocabulary is essential to the message you are trying to convey. In this conversation you need to teach your child about boundaries and how to say no. It is very important for them to know this word and say it if someone is making them uncomfortable in any way whether it’s with inappropriate language or inappropriate touching. No means no. It does not matter who they are.

Keep an open line of communication with your kids so they can feel safe to talk to you if anything is wrong. The initial sex talk about the birds and the bees should not only be a one time thing, keep communication lines open to discuss things if they have any questions in the future. Keep it age appropriate for whatever stage they are in their life.
